Introduce Yourself Fall 2021

Give your name, where you are from and what most interests you about Biology. Also say whether what has helped you in online learning (even if it was just the end of  Spring semester or a bit in high school).

Also list something that you think you can learn in this class that you can not learn simply by googling or by a you tube video

Finally, Say something about yourself (some hobby or interest for example) without  actually naming the hobby or interest. This is like something that has been going around social media in which someone might say “Tell me you are from Michigan without telling me your are from Michigan” and someone else might respond “If someone asks me where I am from, I point at a place on my hand”. Note that there is a scientific reason to do this: You are giving evidence for something, rather than simply making a conclusion.

Put your answer as a reply.

I have to approve all posts, so you will not see your reply immediately.

  1. My name is Victoria Bordayo, I go by Tory. What interests me about biology is learning about all these different worlds that are all around us. Learning things are truly alive when maybe at first glance it does not seem like it. What helps me learn with online classes is one, online real time lecture being able to ask questions. Staying organized(time management), online video tutoring, and email being able to talk quickly with the instructor of the class. Somethings I can learn in this class that I caught be taught by videos or google is the foundational concepts of cell biology, how to make human connections, and connect to the living world around us, learning about cells first hand, and conducting labs/experiments, putting concepts together, and most of all the spark of interest and knowledge fueled by the instructors teachings. Unlike most people I don’t like to have my two feet on dry land, I would rather experience the loss of gravity. (:

  2. My name is Emily Clark, my main interest in biology is about learning how we are made of smaller pieces to a great big puzzle and learning and understanding how those smaller pieces make our livelihoods. One of the biggest methods I have found that helps me with online learning is, one, making sure I’m not doing my homework in my bed. I know it sounds simple but this really helps me to push through and get through the work. The second would be to be honest with your professors, if I don’t understand something I reach out to my professors or tutors. I think that I can learn about the in depth details about how we are cells and how those cells communicate with each other in this class better than I would be able to on the internet. Unlike most people my seven room mates are cute, cuddly, and will great you at the door.

  3. My name is Madison Briegel, I’m interested in learning about all the different cells and how they function. I found that having a planner and a white board to make a to-do list on has helped me to stay organized. I love to make lists of the things I need to accomplish for the day or for the whole week. Writing down in my planner when assignments are due helps me to not forget about completing them. A concept that I will only from a teacher and not from google or YouTube would be how to apply biology to life and make connections.
My favorite place to be is in a barn full of large, four legged animals. Being in the saddle or grooming these gentle giants is my way of decompressing from a long day at work.

    1. One of my former students was an equestrian champion. She went to Vet school at MSU. Is that something you are considering?

  4. My name is Sara Tiwana. I am originally from Pakistan. My family and I moved to the US ten years ago. Something that interests me about biology is that it shows one what human beings, and other organisms, are made up of. I am excited to expand my knowledge on how different organisms function. Online learning can be made easier by using the resources available to us. Teaching biology requires an in-depth understanding of all of its concepts, and learning is basically the same. The concepts of biology cannot be learnt by a Google search. Like others, I like my two feet on the sand!

  5. Howdy everyone! I’m Gabe, I live in the countryside outside of Dimondale. I have always been interested in Biology ever since I was little. It all started when I was one year old. There was a squirrel in my backyard, so I decided it’d be a pretty good idea to climb on top of and jump off of a chair to get a better look at it. I broke my leg and had to be taken to the hospital, that day is my earliest memory I can still remember. I couldn’t walk or crawl around for the next couple months, which doesn’t seem like much time now but when you’re that young it feels like forever. So I was stuck just sitting around playing with toys, drawing with crayons, and reading books. One day, I saw a book about human anatomy mixed in with my story books. I absolutely loved it and wanted to learn about all of the organ systems (except for the endocrine and the lymphatic system, I think they’re cool now but for some reason I don’t remember or understand I just really didn’t like them when I was little). I’ve carried that love of biology ever since then and now I’m going to school to become a genetic engineer.

I’ve been taking online classes for years now, my high school was an on-campus/online hybrid called Nextech. One of the most helpful tools for my learning has been Khan Academy, they have great educational videos and have helped me a ton. Another thing, I’ve always had trouble with procrastination. One trick I’ve found to help me with that is to tell myself I’ll just spend 5 minutes doing schoolwork when I don’t want to. Once those 5 minutes are up, I’ve built up some momentum and it’s much easier to get work done.

One thing I want to learn from this class is how to use a PCR machine and gel electrophoresis box. I want to learn to set up my own DIY genetics lab and perform my own projects.

One of my unnamed hobbies is that I like to put a long hollow object made of wood or plastic in a body of water that flows in one direction and repeatedly slap the water with a double-ended paddle to move faster through the water.

I’m really looking forward to this semester! Thank you for taking the time to read what I wrote down and I hope you have a really great day!

  6. Hi everyone! My name is Lauren Toenjes and I am from Grosse Pointe, Michigan. I am currently finishing up my prerequisites at LCC and MSU to apply to Veterinarian school next Fall!! Animal biology interests me the most. This class will help me build the foundations I need to be successful in animal anatomy and biology. That is what interests me the most. Being able to apply the knowledge from this class to animals. Humans and animals have similar chemical make ups, and learning the basics from this class will further me in my career with animals! What has helped me with online learning is being able to immediately search up a concept that is giving me a tough time and be able to understand it before I move on to another section. Especially in biology, if you don’t understand a certain topic it will be extremely hard to understand how it applies to other things, which is Bio in a nutshell. Everything connects to one another. So having a quick access to the internet has helped when I’ve been stuck. What I can learn from this class that I can’t find online is being able to apply my knowledge in different areas by the different assignments we do in class.
My favorite place to be is with lots of 4 legged patients. They could be sick or not at all. Their parents are either knowledge or clueless. Patients come in many different shapes and sizes. Making them happy, safe and comfortable is all I care about. Assisting in surgeries makes my serotonin rise and work for me, isn’t a job it’s a passion:)
