Introduce Yourself Spring 2022

Give your name, where you are from and what most interests you about Biology. Also say whether what has helped you in online learning (even if it was just the end of  Spring semester or a bit in high school).

Also list something that you think you can learn in this class that you can not learn simply by googling or by a you tube video

Finally, Say something about yourself (some hobby or interest for example) without  actually naming the hobby or interest. This is like something that has been going around social media in which someone might say “Tell me you are from Michigan without telling me your are from Michigan” and someone else might respond “If someone asks me where I am from, I point at a place on my hand”. Note that there is a scientific reason to do this: You are giving evidence for something, rather than simply making a conclusion.

Put your answer as a reply.

I have to approve all posts, so you will not see your reply immediately.

  1. Hi, I’m Grace. I am from Williamston, MI but have moved since. What most interests me about Biology is the aspect of being able to learn more deeply and not just know what the mitochondria are. Something I can learn in class that I can’t learn simply by googling or watching a YouTube video is how to manage my time wisely and get assignments done and turned in in a timely manner.
Something About Myself: I love the aromatic smell of fresh pages.

  2. Hi all,
My name is Christabella, I am originally from Zimbabwe but I now live in Vermontville MI. Biology interests me because I get to learn more about life, being a Christian, this means I get to learn more about God’s wonderful creations and how they all work. I am grateful for online learning because this enables me to still keep my full-time job as I get to pursue my degree and better my and my family’s lives.
By taking this class I believe I can learn how cells work, and learn more about the structures of the cell and how the different processes work together to make the organism the cell is a part of function, I believe I can learn this in this class and not just from google because if I were to just google, I would not know the relevant things to search for and I might not learn all I need to learn on that particular topic because of not knowing the full syllabus.
Lastly, If you were looking for me I would most probably be in the company of fish on top of the water.

  3. Hello, my name is Sam Corbin and I am from Potterville, Michigan but now reside in Byron Center, Michigan. What I enjoy about biology is learning about the complexity of all the living things that are in the world, and the relationships they have with the other living things. More importantly, I enjoy biology at the cellular level because scientists are able to look more in depth about what a cell’s function is and in turn create vaccines.

Something I can learn from this class, not from youtube or google, is time management. Through all of my classes during college, I have had to learn how to manage my time wisely personally and educationally. This course will be another positive way for me to improve my time management skills.

Something about myself: I am getting my Master’s in a field that includes helping athletes with injuries and rehabilitation on the field.

  4. Hello all,
My name is Alysia Moreno, I am from Okemos Michigan. One thing that interests me most about biology is the there are so many different kinds of biology, for example, biology, cell biology, microbiology, zoology and so on.

Something I have found helpful with online learning is utilizing a planner. A planner has helped me stay organized as well as stay on top of all my assignments. Typically at the beginning of the semester, I will look at the course schedule and add dates that I believe are critical, like exams or assignment due dates.

Something about myself- I am an early bird, some people say the best way to start your day. What do you think my hobby is?

  5. Hello, my name is Emily. I am originally from the Metro Detroit area but moved here to Lansing a few years ago. Biology has always fascinated me since I basically learned how to walk. I grew up watching animal planet over cartoons and gave up meat at that time as well. This class will be able to teach me the in-depth details about cells that you can’t just google using layman’s terms. I’ll learn the real terminology to use so if future questions arise outside of this class, I’ll have the tools and capabilities to research them better.

As someone who has profoundly struggled in the past with time management and prioritizing school over fun, it has helped me to stick to a schedule and assign school work to certain hours of the day with hourly breaks to refuel on dopamine. I set a lot of alarms in my phone for both breaks and assignments plus I make sure to use a planner. Writing out my assignments by hand helps me to remember they’re there as well as those alarms in my phone. I also use lots of colored pens when taking notes to trick my brain into thinking it’s fun and it helps organize my thoughts for studying.

My hobby that I most enjoy is stabbing fabric over and over again, then calling it art when I’m done.

  6. Hello, my name is Caitlyn Ellis. I am from Jackson but moved to Lansing about a year ago with my boyfriend. Science has always been a fairly easy topic for me to grasp. Whether its geography, anatomy, biology, etc. However, with biology I feel that cells are one of the areas where I could always use a little more work, so I feel that this class will help me grow stronger in this subject. With online learning you need to have great time management if you want to do well, and this is an area where I have always struggled. Balancing work, school, and responsibilities all at once is difficult to say the least. I feel that having school online for the last two years, I have definitely improved my time management. My hobby that I enjoy in using stick materials containing led or colored wax and using them to make lines on a piece of paper until a picture is formed.

  7. Hello!

My name is Delicia, and I am from Nevada. What most interests me about biology is how we and other organims interact with each other and can communicate together with our environment. I think with the class itself it opens a broad range of jobs, ideas, and not only scientific breakthroughs that it encourages to explore our own world more. It’s a door to help us understand life on a scale from single molecules to whole organisms to entire ecosystems. I don’t think you can learn all of that by google or YouTube.

I most enjoy when I can’t hear my own thoughts and I’m pushing myself to greater PR’s for competition, What’s my hobby??

  8. My name is Cheyann. I am originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan. Biology has always mesmerized me, as it truly dives into the biological backgrounds of living things. Additionally, as my ultimate goal is to be an anesthesiologist, it is vital that I familiarize myself with the effect of anesthesia on human anatomy. However, for me to achieve that, I must first have a conceptual understanding of Biology. Google Calendar has helped me with online learning, allowing me to manage my time and remain updated on due dates.

I believe that this class could teach me about cell interactions and the properties of each cell, connecting Chemistry concepts.

My favorite hobby includes preparing ingredients that are placed into the oven or stove; undergoing a chemical change that allows them to be happily savored.

  9. Hi everybody! My name is Esperanza and I’m from Lansing, MI. What interests me most about biology is learning about the building blocks of organisms. YouTube videos have been the most helpful for me in online learning, but I think I can learn how to prioritize studying without them from this class. My interest is looking at moving pictures.

  10. Hello everyone,
My name is Abder-Rahman Al-Mohidat. I am from a small country in the middle east called Jordan. What interests me about biology is that, through it, we can study complex forms of life and their interactions with each other.
Looking back at my previous experiences, what helped me the most in online classes was:
1- The huge support and help I got from family members.
    2- Using a planner.
    3- Prerecorded lecture videos.
In my opinion, a deep and thorough understanding of the biology of humans, animals, and cells can not simply be gained through using google or watching youtube videos.
Finally, I plan on studying medicine and specializing in a field that involves performing complicated operations on organs inside the skull or back. Can you guess what my future job might be?

  11. Hello! My name is Claudia Juarez-Allison and I am from Haslett, Michigan. Biology has never been my strongest subject, however, I am planning on going into nursing. I believe this course will allow me to grow stronger in the subject and understand the complexity of cell biology, which I would not learn from a simple google search or a YouTube video. Using a large planner has helped so much while taking an online course. It helps with my time management and allows me to stay on track with due dates. My hobby is something that can be seen, but not physically heard, additionally, it allows someone’s imagination to grow. Can you guess my favorite hobby? 🙂

  12. Hi there! My name is Maggie Miller and I am from Charlotte, Michigan. I am interested in biology because there is so much about the world that we have yet to learn even though we’ve already advanced so much in research. The possibilities of discoveries are almost endless. Something that I cannot learn from a Youtube video that I will learn in this class is a hands-on understanding of what we are learning through lab activities. My hobbies include raising guppy and molly fish, painting, and making sandwiches (I work at a deli).

  13. Hi everybody! I’m Ruby, and it’s so nice to meet you all. I was born in Lansing, Michigan and have lived here my entire life. In my opinion, it’s okay. I haven’t lived anywhere else so to me, Lansing is just simply home. Biology is one of the scientific disciplines that come near to my top favorites, which happen to be, along with the social sciences, Anatomy and Physiology. What intrigues me the most is the fact that Biology innately brings us all together. In the midst of the varying differences between each human; our existence, makeup, and evolutionary purpose is the one commonality that seems to be forever constant. To me, I find that extremely comforting, especially during times where I find myself in an existential crisis – which is often enough.

What has helped me during online learning is figuring out how to work independently and finding out my own personal pace of navigating school. This scheduling seems to encourage me to be on top of what I need to be. Overall, I think this class would add more to my fascination of the biological discipline, further confirming my sense of strong purpose in this life. You can’t simply YouTube video that.

Lastly, I often find myself hunched over my laptop scrolling through endless amounts of new tracks. Also, I enjoy making my eyes do some work between the lines and getting my daily dose of energy through some brewing. It’s pretty easy, but can you guess what my hobbies are ? 🙂

  14. Hello everyone!
My name is Emilie Witte, and I am from the Charlotte area. However, I have recently moved to southern Florida and complete all of my classes online. Concepts such as how the earth has evolved and continues to evolve interest me tremendously. I also find the relationship between cells quite fascinating. I’m majoring in Biology, and after medical school I plan to become an anesthesiologist. Online learning the last two years has given me the ability to manage my time much better. It helps me work full time while being a student because I can do my work when it suits me. My ability to pick the environment that I learn in has helped me tremendously with my online schooling. I can pick nice and quiet and comfortable areas to learn in so I can focus attentively on the task at hand.
From this class, I believe that I can learn more about the formation of cells and how they interact with one another. I also think that we will learn about how the structure of a cell depicts their functions and how they interact with their environment.
For my hobby, I love to blow into a metal horizontal pipe while pressing pads and staring at black dots on a page that creates a melody.

  15. Hi everyone!
My name is Anh and I was born and raised in Vietnam. I’ve moved to America and live here in Lansing, Michigan for almost 8 years. What interests me about biology is how living organisms function and rely on each other to survive. There is so much more to learn in biology and I believe that this class would definitely help me learn more in-depth about a topic. With most of my classes being online, I learned how to manage my time between school, work, and taking care of the elders. Since this class includes the labs, something I can learn is how to apply the materials to real-life experience through the labs. Hands-on activities are something that watching youtube or googling can not provide. One thing about myself- I like making sound with one hand pressing selected strings and the other and plucking the strings.

  16. Hello. I’m Shanae. I am from Flint. I am interested in learning bio so that I can understand the body on a molecular level as well as a more complex, anatomical level. Right now, I am working on applying to school to become a healthcare provider: PA or MD. But in my free time, I like to denature food on the stove.

  17. Hi, my name is Danielle and I currently live in Olivet. It has been 10 years since I have been in school, so I honestly don’t remember too much about biology. However, I do remember that I did enjoy biology when I was in school. So, I am excited to get back into this subject.
One of my favorite hobbies involves the smell of fresh air and flowers typically results in dirt caked under your finger nails.
