Introduce Yourself! Fall 2022

Tell the class the following

Where you are from

What you hope to learn in this class

What you find most interesting about Genetics.

If you have taken on-line classes (even if it was just in high school or in the second half of Spring Semester 2020  what has specifically helped you learn on line. What type of activities help you most? Reading? Videos? Interactive activities? Others?

Also list something that you think you can learn in this class that you can not learn simply by googling or by a you tube video.

Finally, Say something about yourself (some hobby or interest for example) without  actually naming the hobby or interest. This is like something that has been going around social media in which someone might say “Tell me you are from Michigan without telling me your are from Michigan” and someone else might respond “If someone asks me where I am from, I point at a place on my hand”. Note that there is a scientific reason to do this: You are giving evidence for something, rather than simply making a conclusion.

Put your answer as a reply.

I have to approve all posts, so you will not see your reply immediately.

  1. My names are Dennis Eborka, I’m exicited to be part of this course. I basically move here from southfield. I’m currently pursuing a degree in biology. Not only am I enthusiastic about the subject in which I pursue, but I am also drawn to artistic pursuits. I’ve always been an engaged student in high school and college. Throughout my school and college years, I participated in several cultural events and received numerous award. I’m excited to learn more about how genetic mismatch can cause disease. I would gladly answer any questions.
    Thank You!

    1. Great! You may have an opportunity to use your artistic skills in this class. This summer I took a design class at LCC with a goal of making images more understandable. You (any anyone else with an artistic nature) can contribute!

  2. Hello! My name is Andrea and I am from Howell. I am nursing a degree of biotechnology here at LCC. I have taken lots of online classes here and I would say that the activities that help the most would be interactive activities and videos. They allow you to see how things work rather than just reading about it. With taking this class I am interested in learning more about how genetics can affect health.
I like science and I also enjoy science in the kitchen! This includes making baked goods! I would not say that I am great at it but I do like to think that I’m good at it! The thing I’m really trying to master is making bread. Everything about bread is so interesting to me. Like for example, how the yeast is alive and you have to first “wake it up” before you can start baking with it.

    1. Good to meet you Andrea! Perhaps you could learn something about the genetics of yeast or of other foods. The genetics of corn is very interesting and researchers have studied the genes that differ between modern corn and it’s Central American ancestor, teosinte, which was domesticated over 9000 years ago and looks very little like the corn we eat today.

  3. Hello everyone, my name is Destinee I am from Lansing MI.

I am a psychology major so what intrigued me about genetics is that certain genes can be inherited by parents that can make their children susceptible to different mental disorders . Or how a mother could experience much stress during a pregnancy passing a tendency to be stressed down to their children so I guess I’m most intrigued by epigenetics.

I have taken online classes for quite sometime and I would say interactive activities help me most.

Honestly I’m not sure what I can learn from this class that I can’t learn from goggle. I’m just excited to learn. I have no doubt that I’ll definitely learn a lot in this class.

A hobby of mine is reading! I love to read and write especially about things that intrigue me. Working out has also become a hobby but I’d like to think of it more as self maintenance.

    1. Destinee: We will certainly cover epigenetics in this class. Relevant to your comments about stress there are some experiments which show that when female rats lick their offspring, the offspring are less stressed and this is an epigenetic effect.

  4. Hi my name is Lihi Ruvio. I am from Isreal but moved to the US when i was 3 years old. I hope to learn more about genetics and get more in depth about the subject. I have always liked genetics i breed cane corso italian mastiffs and we look at generations and what they have similar and pass on. I took two semesters of dual enrollement now 3 and 4 this year i found writing down the week and due dates. I love to swim and swim for the varsity swim team. I think understanding what gets passed down from dog to dog or human to human. I have always liked dogs and have been very connected to them the Westminster do show in NY i was there two year in a row invited.

    1. We will have an opportunity to discuss some dog genetics in this class including some research on genes that may have been involved in dog domestication.

  5. Hi! My name is Ken Meese, I was born and raised in Michigan, specifically in Grand Ledge. I want to know human genetics better and get a better understanding of them. One thing I find very interesting about genetics is that despite how different we can be from each other but deep down our biology is very similar.
I have taken online classes and what helps me is making my due dates and things like that easily accessible so its not had to find my information.
What you can learn in this class versus google is that not necessarily the information is different from google but how the information is presented and organized will be better than google.
    My interest: “No stairway, denied!”

    1. Ken: We will discuss the genetics of individual differences as well the genetics that separates different types of organisms.
I will have to think about your interest statement. It is a bit cryptic.

  6. Hello, my name is Jennifer Benson, and I am from Birmingham, Michigan.

What I find most interesting about genetics is how humans are contain majority of the same makeup, yet the smallest differences make us all different people. During this semester, I hope to learn about how mutations can lead to disease. Overall, I am excited to be taking a class dedicated to human genetics and I am looking forward to this semester!

I have taken numerous online courses, so I am familiar with the general format. What has helped me learn were posted lecture videos (able to pause the video and take notes) and interactive activities for material application.

The difference between this class and learning information from the internet is the way it is presented. Learning from an instructor in a structured class will aid in forming a deeper understanding of human genetics.

    My Hobby:
If someone asks me what my hobby is, I reply with saying I have a lot of sneakers.

    1. Good to meet you. I took up running when the gym closed in 2020. I could probably use a new pair of sneakers.

  7. Hi! My name is Vita Sprader and I am from Hartland, Mi. I hope to get a good understanding of genetics and hope to relate that to my degree in wildlife biology.
Ive taken many online classes and have learned that as soon as you get confused or start to fall behind that it is important to get help.
Its hard for me to learn from just reading like on google so I like that I can interact with other students and the professor to really understand the material.
My hobby: I always have bug spray, tennis shoes/boots, and a water bottle in my car encase there’s a trail that I just can’t pass up!

    1. Good to meet you Vita. Some of the scientists in the “Scientist Profile” exercise are wild life scientists.

    2. Hello, My name is Teneshia. I was raised in Lansing since the age of 4 but I was born around the Detroit area. I was always drawn to anything science related. I really find it interesting that a gene can pass through someone and their very distant family can look just like them, even generations later. When it comes to online classes, it’s very important you have a good communication with your teacher or you won’t progress in the course, and i always like a good interactive activity like edpuzzle or an assignment that allows you to see the questions you got wrong so you can study and go back on them. I think i’ll be able to learn the in-depth version of how things function better in the human body and what morphs a person into looking like a spinning image of someone else.

Hobby: I like creating things, I like sports, and I also like being a couch potato. I honestly like to do a lot of things because i find everything interesting, but i also like to do nothing just to relax.

  8. Hi, my name is Ethan Reynolds, I am from Lansing, Michigan, and I hope to learn more about genetics, the reason I am interested in genetics is because I don’t really know what it is and I enjoy learning new things. Videos helped me the most with online learning in high school. the depth of the content is something I would not be able to google because I wouldn’t even know the questions to ask. Finally, I find myself washing my Gi’s for the sport I do on a weekly sometimes daily basis.

  9. Hello, my name is Caroline Johnston, and I am from Portland, MI. Portland High School offers a 5th year Early College program, which means I graduated last year, but am continuing through LCC to earn my associates degree, all paid for by my high school. I’ve been doing these online courses since Fall 2021. The type of activities that helped me learn the most were discussion posts. I found that reading other people’s ideas was helpful to bounce ideas off of, and I could get constructive criticism from my classmates on my own posts. In this class I hope to learn more about evolutionary patterns. My favorite hobby is something that involves a handheld controller and a gaming console.

    1. Good to meet you Caroline. We wil be discussing the relationship between evolution and genetics especially as it relates to development.

  10. Hello my name is Joel Martinez, I go by the Spanish pronunciation of my name as hoe-elle. I am from Lansing Michigan but both of my parents are from Mexico. I had the fortune to have lived in Mexico for around 6 years and came back to the U.S. in 2017. What I hope to learn in this class is the nature in human as part of the debate nature vs. nurture. Allow me to explain, I am pursuing an anthropology career and I enrolled in this class as a suggestion from my medical anthropology professor who said it would provide me with skills that would make me a better anthropologist. Until now, I have studied how humans develop through nurture (as being social and cultural) but I have only superficially studied how humans developed biologically.. The thing that has helped me with my online courses is a well organized course such as this one. Videos and interactive activities are also appreciated because having content explained to me by others often creates these “ah-ha” moments in which the information connects.
As a mentioned before I believe this class will help me understand more the biology of how humans have developed and changed over time and a simple google search would not be enough to suffice my curiosity.
Something about myself is that sometimes I like to write poetry even though I am not great at it. I like to do it both in English and Spanish.

    1. Very interesting. One thing that we study in the class that is related to anthropology is studying ancestry via DNA analysis.

  11. Hello my name is Kurt Wodtke and I am originally from Rochester, Michigan but I just moved to Knoxville, TN. I am taking this class because I love the science side of the world and want to find out more in depth topics in genetics. I really want to find out about transmission genetics as this has always intrigued me and I want to dig deeper into that. I have taken many online classes at MSU and I found that having videos along with powerpoint type presentations have facilitated my learning. I think that taking a class allows you to bounce ideas off other classmates and see other people’s way of thinking that can not be done just on google. As for my hobby, I love playing a sport I pay a bunch of money to do, but I am still terrible at it and lose equipment every time I play it.

  12. Hi! I’m Wesley and I’m from East Lansing.
CRISPR gene editing is something I find super interesting about genetics, and I hope we can cover that a bit in class.
I’ve taken a fair amount of online classes, and the most helpful material has been videos and interactive activities.
As for my interests, I will say that I do a double take every time someone uses the word “glimpse”

  13. Hello, my name is Damian Nunzio and I am originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am currently working towards my second degree while I work for the State Police as an IT Tech. Since I work full time, I often prefer taking online courses since it works well with my job. I believe that videos are the best way to learn since it is a little more interactive when taking notes rather than going through power points.
When I first started school up again, I took a few biology courses that had discussed genetics and genetic mutation, often in reference to cancer. I found that to be fascinating, even though I know a few people who have had cancer in the past. As an IT guy, I have always like to break down things and figure out how they worked. This can be said for many different types of subjects, but I have found that Biology and IT are very similar in structure. With personal research, I have learned more about the Tumor Suppressor Gene. Within this course, I would hope that we get to delve into more about how DNA mutations can lead to cancerous tumors.
I have many interests but mostly my hobbies include things that go along within the IT world. IT is a massive subject from things like coding, Networking, helpdesk, security, and the list goes on and on. For me I like to build networks, and then attempt to test the security of it. If I am not working on some kind of networking, I also enjoy running the river trail or kayaking.

  14. Hi,
My name is Chloe Franklin I’m originally from Westland, Michigan until 2016 when I moved to Benzonia, Michigan and now in Lansing. I’m interested to just learn more in this class as I have a basic understanding of genetics through biology. What’s so interesting about genetics is that it plays a role in everything in a single person from physical appearance to hereditary diseases and more that I am looking forward to learning about.
I’ve been taking online classes before COVID made everyone go online so some tricks I’ve learned is to always bring my laptop with me if I even think I’ll have a second of free time, I’m a very busy person and working a lot so it’s hard for me to have set times to do my work. Trying to stay on time with my assignments is a big thing I try to do so I always make sure to know when assignments are due. I know I’ll be able to learn more than just youtube videos because it’s coming from a valuable source not just some random person from youtube. Hobbies are fun and all but I like to just do any hobbies along as I have good company.

  15. Greetings all! I have a convoluted hyphenated french first name, so I prefer my initials, JP. I’m 40 and from Lansing, originally from Saginaw. I’m currently wrapping up my last semester at LCC with a Transfer Studies degree majoring in biology with a minor in psychology. Ultimate (hope?) goal is to transfer to EMU or MSU for Bachelor of Science in Biology to eventually get into a Physician Assistant program. I started on the nursing path, but it wasn’t exactly the type of medicine i wanted to practice.
My overall hope is to get a good foothold on genetics and genetic interactions in order to get a more in depth understanding of all biology – genetic disorders have always been a fascination of mine, as several types of cancer and congenital disorders run rampant on both sides of my family.
Restarting school last semester after a hiatus due to the pandemic, the one thing that helped me the most was Youtube – especially with chemistry. As a visual and tactile learner, taking notes while watching a chemical reaction being written helped me retain the information better. Find your personal learning style and run wild with it!
Ultimately, I hope to learn the ins and outs of how exactly gene therapy works, both utilizing CRISPR and without. I can find this info elsewhere, though having the background from this class I feel would provide a layer of understanding on the subject that YouTube can’t match.
Finally, the hobby – utilizing fossilized plants to recycle junk into useful items. Good luck all!

  16. Hi! My name is Delaney Parkin, I am a high school student from the Lansing area (Michigan). I know a little bit of basic genetics from my biology class, but I hope to learn more about genetics, and genetic disorders. For some reason, genetic disorders have always fascinated me, I don’t really know why. I guess I like learning about all the different disorders, and the cause and effects of them. I have not taken any online classes yet, so i have been reading everyone’s advice. I think I can learn more about the intricate details of genetics in this class than I would be able to in a simple yooutube video. I love going to the beach and hiking, and I spend alot of my time training at a studio and I love being on stage (that is the hint for my hobby).

  17. Hello! My name is Vedrana Kaletovic, but I can go by Vex to make things easier. I am originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina located in eastern Europe, however I moved here to the Lansing area about 6 years ago. I attend Haslett High School and I am a senior.
Considering I have taken biology, I most likely have little knowledge to human genetics and I am hoping to learn much more about that in details. Specifically, the common genetic orders and the causes. When I have taken online classes in the past, lesson plans and activities/review was especially helpful to me. Although youtube was a suggested source, I believe you cannot learn the same things based off of a video, which is why this class will be more special than that.
The mood for the rest of my day after school basically depends on how well I kick a ball- hope this was a good hint!
