Hi! My name is Olivia, but I prefer to go by Liv. I am from the Lansing area and have lived here my whole life. In this class I hope to learn more about genetics, specifically if your dominant hand is determined by genetics. I have always been a really big fan of genetics, since I was a kid I always would ask why things are a certain way. With genetics I feel like I get to know why and how people can look and sometimes act the way they do. If the two people in the photo had kids, a trait the kids could have would be curly hair. Since 2020, I have taken mainly only online classes something that really helps me learn are assignments that I have had to do that require me to do some reading to answer the questions. I hoping in this class to learn more about genetic mutations and why they occur. If someone were to ask me my favorite hobby, I would tell them that it involves a camera and the outdoors.

Hi! My name is Rylee. I am from New Lothrop which is quite the hike from Lansing. In this class I hope to learn more about genetics, specifically if allergies are determined by genetics. Something I find really interesting about genetics is how complex they are. If the two people in the photo had kids, a trait the kids could have would be red hair. Since 2020, I have taken a bunch of online classes. Something that really helps me learn are assignments that make me read in order to answer the questions as well as interactive activities. Something I can learn in this class and not from google or a youtube video is what genetic traits I got from my parents. In this class I am hoping to learn more about genetic mutations. If someone were to ask me what my job was, I’d tell them I spend my days making sure the most demanding primates get their favorite snacks.
My name is Rachel. I am from Grand Rapids, MI. The idea of genetics has always been fascinating, but I have been paying close attention specifically to genetic diseases as that is prevalent in my family and my children and therefore is an area that I would like to learn more about. The most intriguing part of genetics is how you can be related to people so “unlike” you, but yet have all the same foundations.
As for the couple above, I assume that one trait that their child would hold would be some brown eyes.
Online courses are a little bit of a novelty to me as a student. The internet was a novelty itself when I went to school (that really ages me) and dial up was no ones friend for fast paced learning. I was teaching during 2020 and had to come up with different activities to come up with to engage the students. I always used a combination of activities, reading, and explained “the big idea” and “Sleda Summary” via video. Those are the same things I hope to learn from this online class that I can’t just narrow down from the wealth of information out on the internet.
If I were to piece together some clues about one of my hobbies, I could keep it a mystery by saying I am a speed dissectologist. That might seem like I am giving the answer, but would require some sleuth work, which is my favorite part of my hobby.
We will have some videos in this class to help explain concepts and our webex sessions will be recorded.
Hi my name is Ava Palmatier! I am from Williamston, MI. I am a duel enrollment student and a senior at Williamston high school there. I am looking forward to learning more about genetics in any ways I can as I have always found it interesting. I am specifically looking forward to learning about all the different ways genetics can mutate and change. One of the things I find interesting is how someone can have red hair when no one in their family in resent years has red hair and how they still end up with that gene. If those two people had a kid one trait they may have is brown curly hair. When I am learning one line one of the things I find the most helpful is watching videos and taking notes because that way I can pause the video and go back and which stuff when needed. I think that by taking this class I will be able to learn more about all the different combinations of genes and what they make happen than I would be able to from the internet. If someone asked me what my hobby was I would say it involves a ball, gloves, cleats and a goal. When doing it I dive and jump a lot.
My name is Lincoln Ostrander and I am from Grand Ledge, Michigan. During this course I hope to learn as much as I can about genetics. One things I find very interesting about genetics is the amount of different species that can come from eachother, more specifically in animals. For example there are hundreds of different snake species and some can breed together and some cannot, its fascinating. If those people had children, one trait the children may posses is eye color from one of the parents. Taking online classes I think videos help me learn the best as they are a mini-movie and keep my attention. My main hobby would be involving sports in some way. PLaying basketball or golf, watching football, or playing the new college football video game.
Hi everyone, my name is Jess! I am from Brighton, MI. I am hoping to learn more about genetic illnesses, how they are passed down, and how they present differently depending on sex or other factors. Something I find interesting about genetics is spontaneous mutations. I have a genetic disease that neither of my parents have due to a spontaneous mutation which I find very fascinating. If the two people pictured had a baby, a trait they could have is brown eyes. I have taken numerous online classes but have found online science classes to be difficult. Something that helps me a lot is interactive activities as they really help me stay on track and focus on the material. I also really like making flashcards for certain concepts. A hobby of mine involves turning yarn into a creation using a hook.

I am currently pregnant and find it so exciting to think about all the possible combinations of genetics my son could have from my husband and I! I find genetic abnormality very interesting. I believe that a child of the couple shown will likely have textured hair. I have taken many online classes throughout my college years and find videos most helpful. I believe I can learn more about how genetic abnormalities come to be in this class. One of my favorite hobbies includes a plane, but I’m not the pilot!
Hello, my name is Mariah, I am from Fowlerville MI, but currently stay in Lansing MI. My major is psychology, however I love genetics if I did not chose psych I would have chose something to do with biology or the human anatomy. I am hoping to learn about genetic mutations and refresh myself on different traits that are possible and why they come through in different people, which is why I find genetics interesting as well because of the different combinations that can occur and simply science classes have always been my thing. I am not sure on this, but I would like to think dirty blonde hair would be a trait one of the children would have from this couple. Online classes is not something that I experienced before college this is my third semester and I feel like the one thing that helps me the most is being able to read texts at my own pace and take notes on the information and not having to rush to try and note down all the information being told to me in person. If anything I feel like I can learn more in depth information in this class than I can by watching a you tube video, and one of my favorite hobbies involves a ball and a court, and if I am not in school or working ill be on the court.

Hi, my name is Jason, and I’m a dual enrolling Senior from Okemos High School. I hope to learn the extent of genetic mutations in humans and how they can benefit us as a species. I find it really interesting how humans across the planet differ genetically by less than 1% but if you go outside you will almost never see two people that look identical. If those two individuals had children, they might end up with wavy hair. I haven’t taken any online classes before (unless you can’t school during covid). If you do count it, then short readings like brief articles and videos helped me a lot. Something I can learn from this class that I can’t from searching online is what genetic information causes different hair shapes and textures. If someone asked me about my favorite hobby, I would say destroying and rebuilding tissues (not the ones you use to below your nose).

I am hoping to learn more about the processes of how genetics contributes to the inheritance of specific traits! I find that the most interesting thing about genetics is the variability each child can have from their parents, whether those are similarities or differences that are inherent throughout generations!

I have taken online classes during covid, which was quite the transition after never experiencing an online class prior. One thing that I believed has helped me with online learning, is to make sure that I have a schedule for myself – as it can be easy to fall behind given the flexibility of an online schedule. I find that videos and interactive activities benefit my learning style with courses of this nature.
If I had to mention something that I believe I can learn in this course that isn’t necessarily searchable – would be how genetics contributes to autoimmune disorders.

Hello, My name is Hannah Marshall. I am from Stockbridge Michigan. During the course of this class I am hoping to learn how genetics shape people into who we see. I think it will be very interesting learning how genetics works. I believe if the people in the two images had a baby one trait I believe the child would have would be brown eyes. I have taken my online classes and for me the things that help me the most are videos to watch followed by a discussion. Hello. My name is Emma Roberts and I am a senior at Howell High School. Even though I attend Howell public schools I live near Webberville MI. I hope to learn more about how multiple genes can be used to effect one area. Like how multiple genes effect the type of hair you have. I think the most interesting thing about genetics is recessive genes. I think it is incredible that you can have two parents with black hair, but you may be born with blond hair. One trait from the 2 people mentioned above could be brown eyes from the mother’s side. I think online earning has allowed me to spend less time in my class, so when I am in the class I am more focused. I prefer videos in online learning. I think it is because I can see graphics but also read the captions. I think something I can learn in this class but cannot learn elsewhere is how multiple genes layer over eachother. When I leave my barn, I find myself covered in fur.

My name is Ashton McKellar and I am from Fenton. Throughout the duration of the class, I hope to become more comfortable with understanding inheritance of certain traits, and trait probability. I briefly learned about genetics in high school, but never felt like I fully grasped the concept of it. I would also like to learn about the prevalence and variety of genetic disorders as I see a lot of these in my current job in the medical field and find it very interesting. If the two people above had a child, it would be tough to guess what color hair the child would have. Depending on the genotype of the parents, the child could have dark hair like mom, or light hair like dad.

My name is Madelyn, I’m from Lansing Michigan and this is my third year at LCC. My major is Sports Medicine and Kinesiology and I hope to get more of a knowledge about genetics from this class. I feel like it’s such a deep field and there is so much to learn about it and I’m excited to explore that this year! Something I find interesting about genetics is genetic conditions, and understanding how they are inherited. I find things like gene carriers and genetic testing very interesting and I would love to learn more about it! One trait the child of these two people could have is brown eyes. I have taken a few classes online here at LCC and I do like them but if I don’t keep up tend to fall behind easy. Things that help me are Interactive activities and just communicating with my professors when I need help. I have learned it’s better to reach out for help when you first need it then when you’ve fallen very far behind. What I find most interesting about genetics would be the category of genetic disorders and the different mutation processes associated with this. I have taken multiple online classes over the last year and a half; one thing that helped the most is to stay ahead of schedule and to do my work before the day of deadline. Secondly, I take physical notes on the material which is very helpful. In this class, I think I am going to be able to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms in human genetics instead of surface-level information you typically get by surfing the web. After I get home from work, I enjoy performing mini concerts for myself of my favorite music.

Hello, I’m Maryam but my friends and family call me mimi. I’m from Lansing, but originally from Iraq. I hope to learn more about the passing of genetic diseases in families. I took two genetics classes in high school and was fascinated ever since. It’s quite a complex sciences, but it makes sense.
I know people have already mentioned the above people would have a curly haired offspring, but I wanted to add that there is a chance the offspring might have blue eyes. I found out that many brown eyed people carry a recessive blue eye gene, and if the woman above had it they will for sure have one.
When taking online classes, I found myself grasping information better when there is a variety of informational sources and not just read or just videos. I also appreciated interactive professors that were able to reply to questions and concerns.
A simple google search does not really explain the process of genetics and how it’s different for physical traits, health, diseases, etc. I believe the class would be able to explain it further.
On my off days I tend to poke many holes in my fingers and proceed to be angry at my projects, even though a solution would be as simple as a thimble. 🙂
Hello, my name is Alec and I am from Macomb Michigan. I am a post baccalaureate student who previously attended Michigan State, but I have also taken a couple of classes at LCC. While taking this class, I hope to learn more about the genetic issues that present when inbreeding occurs. I work in a veterinarian hospital and unfortunately, there are rare instances where animals die at a young age because the breeders are irresponsible with their breeding selection. What I have found most interesting about genetics (thus far), are the are the telomere sequences that are at the end of DNA sequences which protect the chromosomes from deterioration. After completing my entire freshman year of college online, I have learned that checking your email and becoming comfortable with D2L can help you stay on top of assignments and exams. Reaching out to the instructor or other students with questions is also very supportive. I enjoyed interactive lecture videos because It gives me an idea of what pieces of information the instructor values as important/wants me to learn. I hope to learn more about cancer regulation genes as this is a complicated concept to me. If one were to ask what I like to do with my time, I would tell them it involves working with four legged mammals.
Hello, my name is Aurora. I am originally from Macomb but I have been living in Lansing for the last 5 years for school and work. I am hoping to learn more about genetics specifically on blood type. One thing I find interesting about genetics, is how certain traits can be dominant and certain traits can be recessive yet recessive traits still have a 25% chance of shining through. If the following individuals had a child one trait that the child could inherit is brown hair. I have previously taken online classes during COVID, one thing that helped me learn online was how I could rewind lectures and watch lectures at my own pace. Activities that helped me the most was having extra problem questions with answers and reasonings. Videos also helped significantly, as for interactive activities not as much. One thing I can learn in this class is how to have better time management as there are multiple readings and assignments. One thing I like doing is going out to a place and not dropping weights on the ground or falling off of a moving platform I can control the speed of.
Hi, my name is Rachel. I am from the East Lansing Area, and just recently moved back. I hope to learn more about how I inherited the same shaped hands as my mom. I find genetics interesting because of how it connects people through generations. Even if we are not connected by physical traits you can often see it in their personalities.
If the two people in the images had children, they would likely inherit most of the dominant traits from the woman on the left, for example, curly dark hair, dark eyes, dark skin. If the woman happened to carry the recessive traits of the man on the left, they might have a chance of getting his light eyes or lighter hair.
I’ve taken a few online classes in high school and in college. I think it helped the most to make a habit of writing my schedule of assignments down so I never miss a due date. I tend to zone out of videos sometimes so I like the occasional assignment or reading. I never liked group projects online. I don’t think it gives the proper space for collaborating.
It’s always helpful getting to see other people’s questions in classes, something you cannot get from search engines. Genetics classes also offer a perspective on why genetics is important.
On the weekends I like to hit a small white ball with a long stick for 18 holes.
Hi, my name is Ruby. I reside in Okemos, but I was actually born in the Philippines and I used to live in New York before moving to Michigan. I have always been intrigued by genetics and I steer more towards the mental heath\neurological aspects of it. I want to learn more about how certain traits can be passed down through families and the outcome of said traits depending on the person.
If the following individuals had offspring, then they would have a higher chance of having curly hair and brown eyes. Both curly hair and brown eye traits are dominant and would show up more in their offspring.
I have taken my fair share of online classes and I find that I do better when I have a checklist for myself for my classes. I tend to be very forgetful and I put off a lot of assignments till last minute. Making a checklist has helped my space out my days so I’m not trying to cram all of my assignments in one day.
A hobby of mine would involve 12 people in total, a ball and net. Technically it is considered a “Tall person sport,” but my role is exempted from that.
Hello, my name is Chloe. I am from Saint Johns, which is about 20 miles north of Lansing. I hope to learn things about genetics that I did not know before, basically diving deeper into genetic concepts that I may have touched the surface of in high school. I find genetics interesting, especially on the psychological level. The question of how much of our lives are determined by our birth is fascinating to me.

I have taken some online classes. I find that it’s easier for me if I write things down on my own time. Reading is better for me than videos because it is much easier for me to go at my own pace and take notes where I need to.
This class is better for me to take instead of watching a video or googling because I am using this class to gauge my overall interest in human biology and, by extension, my interest in a medical career.
Something that I like to do in my spare time involves putting various discs into a machine that spins them around in order to read them and produce sound.
My hobby is listening to music (specifically on my CDs.)
