Introduce Yourself! Spring 2021

Tell the class the following

Where you are from

What you hope to learn in this class

What you find most interesting about Genetics.\

If you have taken on-line classes (even if it was just in high school or in the second half of Spring Semester 2020  what has specifically helped you learn on line. What type of activities help you most? Reading? Videos? Interactive activities? Others?

Also list something that you think you can learn in this class that you can not learn simply by googling or by a you tube video.

Finally, Say something about yourself (some hobby or interest for example) without  actually naming the hobby or interest. This is like something that has been going around social media in which someone might say “Tell me you are from Michigan without telling me your are from Michigan” and someone else might respond “If someone asks me where I am from, I point at a place on my hand”. Note that there is a scientific reason to do this: You are giving evidence for something, rather than simply making a conclusion.

Put your answer as a reply.

I have to approve all posts, so you will not see your reply immediately.

  1. Hi! My name is Julia Sims, I am from Brandon, Florida but I moved to St. Johns Michigan a few years ago. I hope to learn about Human Genetics and its effect on sexes, cancer, and the immune system. I find genetic traits most interesting. I think that most of this information could e found and learned by the internet, but being able to connect all of the factors of genetics we will learn to the greater picture of how it affects us in the past and present.

Hobby evidence: getting to the mall is muscle memory at this point

  2. Hello! My name is Ashley. I am from Fresno California. I have always loved genetics, and I just hope to learn more about it. That is if I don’t know everything already. I actually learn better online. It’s easier for me, so I don’t get too distracted by my surroundings like I would If I was in a normal classroom.

    I say “soda” not “pop”.

  3. Hello! My name is Dorothy. I am from Jackson, MI. In this class, I hope to learn a lot about genetics and how I will be able to relate this to my future as a nurse. I have had a recent interest in genetic disorders and am excited to learn more about them. I have taken online classes before and I personally learned best through videos and interactive assignments. One thing that I know I can gain from learning genetics in the online classroom instead of through googling is I can know the information is accurate. Lastly, I enjoy making things with my hands and needles that brings beauty into the world.

  4. Hi my name is Charles Wentworth. I am from Lansing, MI. I hope to learn about basic genome mapping, so that I can carry this information to a career in genetic engineering. Really I just find the idea of one single type of particle dictating everything about a being fascinating. I find that I learn best from interactive activities. I think that it is best to learn this information from an actual class, because of how many conspiracy theories are floating around about genetics.

I like to use pencils to leave lines on a page.

  5. Hi! My name is Thalia. I am originally from Olivet, Michigan, but I have recently moved to East Lansing. From this class I am hoping to apply the learning outcomes that I learn from genetics to my future science classes or future career. Genetics are interesting to me because I work as a dental assistant, and I know that a lot of oral diseases have a lot to do with genetics and clinical application, and I think that it would be great for me to learn a lot more. I can learn best by watching videos, and getting a hands on experience even if we are online. I highly enjoy what Northern Michigan has to offer at any time of the year.

  6. Hello, I am Allison Clark. I’m from Mason, Michigan. During this class I hope to learn about how a person’s genetics affect what they pass on to their children- I have an interest in hereditary disease and am looking forward to learning more about it. This semester will be my second fully online. I think the easiest way for me to learn online is through interactive assignments, and watching videos. I think learning in a class rather than looking up information myself will be helpful because there is a structured plan and I’ll learn any background information I need before I encounter each lesson.

Hobby Hint: I spend a lot of time on nature trails.

  7. I was born and raised in East Lansing, Michigan but my family is from Egypt.
I hope to learn more about mrna as there has been much more talk about this since the release of the coronavirus vaccine, since the vaccines is utilizing this tool.
I have taken online courses last spring and fall since everything moved online. Videos on the process we are learning have helped me; worked through problems/examples.
I think I will learn more about diseases, mutations and what makes every human different.
My favorite tv show growing up was the property brothers.

  8. Hello, I’m Noah Larson! I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, but recently came to Lansing to live with some friends of mine. Quite frankly, I’m not sure what it is about Human Genetics that interests me so much, but that’s kind of what I want to figure out, haha! Last semester was my first semester of online classes, and I would have to say that out of all the ways that the classes were taught, I got the most out of videos. Things I can repeat over and over while taking my own notes from ended up being super helpful for me in the long run.

Hobby: Recently, I’ve been learning how to interact with a musical instrument that is made of wood and you play using chords.

  9. Hello! I’m from Trenton, MI! I hope to use the information I learn and incorporate it into my future nursing career. I think the most interesting part of genetics is learning how diseases are passed down from family members. I think the most helpful part of online classes is meeting on zoom with the class, practice assignments and review sessions. I think having Genetics in class is important because discussing topics is more valuable than watching a youtube video. Lastly, I like going 20 mph down a hill in the cold and falling on my face

  10. Hello, I’m Tung Hoang (Tyler). I am from Vietnam. I moved to Michigan in 2018. I hope I can learn about cancer, and how to treat cancer. Videos are really helpful to study the material. Discussion, problem quiz help me to understand better material than just watching the videos on youtube.
Hobby hint: I found the way to live as many more lives and as many kinds of lives.

  11. Hello, I’m Tyler, I’m from Dewitt Michigan. I learned how to use online resources provided by my school in seventh grade, and we used them most of the time throughout high school, all I had to do was adapt to a different system, which was pretty easy. But with the spring semester, I basically knew what I was doing, but going to my friend’s house helped the both of us with our math class. In this class, I think you could learn more about genetic makeup of people than you would on the internet, because with a college class I’d think you’d go pretty in-depth.

Hobby: I listen to a certain band from the 60s and play their records for people on my social media.

  12. Hey, I’m Sami. I grew up in the East Lansing area but my family is from Egypt. The study of Genetics is super interesting to me because it helps us understand what makes human beings different from one another and how certain traits/diseases occur in various populations. This is very useful information in the real world to help us treat said diseases. The most helpful thing for me personally when it comes to online learning is recorded video lectures, because this allows me to go back and revisit a part that I did not fully understand. One thing I believe I will learn in this class that I would not otherwise learn outside of class is the complexity of Mitosis. Googling this would give me some diagrams of mitosis and brief explanations of the stages. The other details, like what processes are going on in the cell during various stages of Mitosis or whether the chromosomes are replicated or not would be harder to find. My favorite sport is American football.

  13. Where you are from
Hi, I’m Mackenzie. I’m from Lansing and I’m a nursing major here at LCC. I’ve always had an interest in genetics but in high school they only made a trimester long and we never got in depth like I wanted. I hope to learn about how genetics can be pasted on to multiple children from the same parents and still have different ancestry. I find all things involved in genetics to be equally interesting but if I had to pick on thing, I’d pick probably what I’m most excited to learn about: how even from the same parents we can have different ethnicities.

The things that helped me the most in my other online classes have been being able to access all past homework and readings and also having videos. I get burned out from reading boring text books so it’s a nice change of pace when I can watch a video. Something that I can’t learn from googling it myself is the amount of mutations and gene-link diseases that are out there.
For my hobby: I talk to a camera about biology and then post it online for tweens and teens to watch and learn about puberty.

  14. Hi! My name is Holly Moser and I am from Drummond Island, MI. In this class I hope to learn more about how certain genetic diseases are passed down from parents to offspring. I am also interested in learning more about mRna as that has become increasingly popular with the new covid vaccine. There are so many things about genetics that I find interesting, but hereditary diseases fascinate me the most. I have taken many online classes due to Covid and have found that I learn best by watching videos/listening. The ability to connect with my classmates and share ideas even via technology is something that will facilitate my learning and couldn’t be done by googling.

Finally, in the summertime I like to glide across the water with boards on my feet.

  15. Hello, my name is Nicole!

Last spring I graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Kinesiology, and a Health Promotions minor! Since I graduated, I have been working as a Medical Assistant for a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctor out in Novi Michigan, and I’m hoping to apply to Physicians Assistant School next cycle. This is one of my last courses to take before applying to the program, and I am excited to be apart of this class while living through this pandemic because I think I will benefit and learn a lot! I am very interested in learning more about genetics diseases and how they affect an individual. I have been in an online class before, and I think something I have found very helpful is to have an outline or checklist of the course, and have review guides and review sessions before unit exams.

  16. Hello, I’m Nestor. I was born in Mexico, I lived for 10 years in the Mitten and now I live in Missouri.
I find Genetics super interesting for many reasons but mainly for the potential it has to be used in every day applications. I’m sure this class will teach me about some of them. I have taken online classes before and i like the fact that they are more flexible. I also work full time so they are very convenient with my schedule.
In order to kill some time during this pandemic i watch a few Netflix, Hulu, and HBO shows. I have also been finding myself playing RISK and learning about Chess on my cellphone.

    1. Risk? I have not played that in a long time. I do like to play board games. I do have some games to help learn genetics.

  17. Hey guys!

My name is Jacqueline (Jacqui) and my hometown is around Rochester, Michigan! I really hope to learn more about the basics of genetics with a dive into epigenetics because it seems so interesting to me. I have taken a few online classes and I have learned that creating a set schedule is helpful to kind of hold myself accountable. I enjoy videos and interactive activities as it makes me feel like we are in class (which is my preferred way of learning). From what little I know about genetics, it is a complicated study which is why I want learn more of the basics. I feel as though google and youtube are wonderful resources, but for things that you already have a basic understanding for. It can often give you many perspectives and you can get you lost in details without it.

&Hm, if someone were to ask me if I had any free time outside of studying (before quarantine) I would simply just have them smell the coffee radiating off of me every day and hope that would answer their question.

  18. Hi, I’m Hoppe from Lansing, MI. I’m interested in evolutionary genetics, and I hope to understand how genetics can be leveraged to improve human health. I’ve taken a few online courses before and it seems like consistent interaction with the material through readings, lecture notes, and videos has helped me in the past. I don’t have good answers for what I’m unable to google at the moment, but I hope to be made painfully aware of good ones at many points throughout the semester. I’m also not much of a Marvel fan.

  19. Hello Everyone! My name is Sarah Odumodu. I’m from Ann Arbor, Michigan.

I hope to learn more about how genetics is used in current research, since this is a field I’m interested in going into! (Talking about things like CRISPR sound really interesting, but also things like the covid-19 vaccines or other current topics would help connect what we learn in class to things going on currently)

I’ve taken online classes in the past (usually just ne or two a semster for gen eds) until covid-19 hit. So far, I think I’m handling online classes well. Usually, I watch a video that covers the topic well, then practice what I learn with problems before class. Then, I go to online meetings/office hours to ask any questions that clarify anything I don’t understand. I find that this methid works the best for me.

SInce the syllabus said that we would be reviewing articles, I’m hoping that I might learn how to read research papers! I was part of a lab last year (only breifly because covid-19 canceled that experience), so I would like to learn more about the current research in the genetics field. I don’t think this is something I could learn in a youtube video.

Hobby interest: I use a variatey of tools (paints, charcoal, markers, pencils, etc.) to create beautiful images!

  20. Hello everybody! My name is John Lawrence and I am from Byron, Michigan. I currently work full time at the University of Michigan hospital and currently pursuing PA school. I hope to learn about genetic mutation and how it has impacted our world. The most interesting thing I have found about genetics is how we can manipulate features of different species to get the desired outcome such as dogs or even fruit fly’s! This is my 5th online class at LCC and I think the most helpful activity during my time online is having worksheets that keep students interactive during a video lecture. Something that I think would be very difficult to learn from a youtube video is how chromosomes arrange themselves during replication. My hobby entails hours of practice and dedication to the outdoors. People can do this as a hobby and some people even make a living out of doing it. Most of the time you have to be careful not to drop your phone because if you do it might be gone forever unless its… waterproof. Thats just a little about me and look forward to what this course has to offer.

  21. Hi,
I am from San Diego, Ca. I hope to learn about different genetic conditions/disorders and how they can be treated. The most interesting thing about genetics is the current studies on how our genes, such as the MAOA gene, can increase our likelihood of violent/criminal behavior. I have taken multiple online courses and what helps me the most is recorded video lectures with a slideshow since I am a visual learner. I hope to learn more about which genes predispose us to different behaviors. I believe this class will go more in-depth and that our genetics is one way to determine the motive for one’s action.

Interest: I have a pet that is part of the weasel family. They are known to sleep and be very social.

  22. Hello, i am Ailie and i’m from Kansas, i moved to Charlotte Michigan about 5 years ago. During this class i hope to learn about how a persons genetics are passed on to their children. i have taken a few online classes before, its not my favorite thing, but there isn’t much to do about that with covid, i learn best watching videos and taking lots of notes.
hobby: i don’t have very many hobbies given i spend most of my free time at work

  23. Hi, my name is CaTera Taylor and I am from Lansing, Mi. I am VERY interested in learning about some of the genetic disorders and genetic cancers. What I find most interesting about genetics is that illnesses can be passed down through them and it seems pretty complicated to learn but I am very excited. I have taken online classes in the past and they are very hard for me. I prefer to be in a face-to-face lecture because it keeps me more focused and disciplined. Although, I found that videos/pre-recorded lectures have helped me in some classes. I do not think I can learn about diorders by googling or watching a youtube video.
Interest: swiping my debit/credit card at many stores.

  24. Hi!
My name is Danyelle Foster and I’m from Detroit, MI. I’ve always enjoyed genetics from high school courses and mentions in other biology courses. I believe it’s because I see the problems as little puzzles to be solved. For the longest I wanted to become a pediatrician with a subspecialty in genetic counseling, but I’ve recently but quite intrigued in dermatology. I still look forward to learning as much as I can about genetics. I have taken several online classes at both LCC as well as other campuses. Videos and interactive videos really help create a picture a make concepts “click” to me.

    Hobby:
I turn my kitchen into a lab and create items for a luxurious spa day.
